At the 11th annual Surftoberfest in downtown Corpus Christi on October 17, 2026, an installation called The Board Walk brought together more than 20 Texas surfboard shapers. Photographer Jon Steele organized it with Executive Surf Club owners Brad and Richard Lomax to give overdue credit to the craftsmen behind the Lone Star State’s surf scene. Surfer’s gallery traces Texas shaping back to at least the late 1960s with Danny Jauer and Galveston’s BJ Williamson, and features portraits of shapers including Caleb Bass, Larry Arce, Mark Smalley and Roy Maza. Steele plans to grow it into an annual showcase with video interviews.

From backyard shaping bays to boards built for world-class waves, meet the craftsmen carrying Texas surfboard shaping into the next generation.
