Why surfers love it: Surf movie night needs a big bowl that everyone can grab from. This one is crunchy, salty and a little sweet, it costs almost nothing, and it's ready before the opening credits finish.
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp coconut or neutral oil
- ½ cup popcorn kernels
- 4 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp soy sauce or shoyu
- 1 tsp sugar (optional)
- 3-4 tbsp nori furikake seasoning
- 1 cup arare (Japanese rice crackers)
- Salt, to taste
Method
- Put the oil and 3 kernels in a large heavy pot with a lid over medium-high heat.
- When those kernels pop, add the rest of the kernels in an even layer, cover and take the pot off the heat for 30 seconds so they heat evenly.
- Return the pot to the heat. Once popping starts, shake the pot gently every few seconds, keeping the lid slightly cracked to let steam out.
- When popping slows to 2-3 seconds between pops, pour the popcorn into a very large bowl right away.
- Melt the butter with the soy sauce and sugar in the warm pot, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
- Drizzle the butter mix over the popcorn while tossing, then sprinkle on the furikake and toss again. Add the arare, taste, and add a pinch of salt if needed.
Tip: Toss in a big paper grocery bag: add the popcorn, drizzle, sprinkle, fold the top and shake. Popcorn is a choking hazard for little kids, so give the youngest crew members something else.
Surf-town roots
Furikake popcorn with arare, often called hurricane popcorn, is a favorite movie snack in Hawaii. We serve it for surf film nights in the Theatre.
